Stockings ? Time to Get a Leg Up, Again

Silk Stockings
It was not all that long ago  silk stockings became a staple of women's costume. Leg wear has been around as long as we are alive, but it was not until the early twentieth century, fashion has hit the mainstream. Winds were full and a new found freedom and independence. Women have taken the initiative to make the world their own. In this way, the fashion industry came forward on the main stage and opened up new ways of life of women around the world.

Not many years later came the war and depression. When men overseas fighting the war, women were now officially called to work as a human being. Women stepped up the challenge and did a great job.

At the Expo 1939 in New York, DuPont unveiled their new scientific breakthrough: Nylon. Until now, women's stockings traditionally made of silk. With this new material to the creation of nylons that we know today. The synthetic material is elastic, easy and relatively inexpensive to produce. Netherlands have been expensive to produce, and they were custom fit. Nylons were one size fit for all.

Women were now able to purchase more than one pair of nylon stockings and did not need to spend so much money. During  World War II, nylon was used for military tents, parachutes, and more, creating a shortage in the shops. Shortly after the war, however, women's legs started buzzing again.

The return of silk stockings

After the invention of nylon, silk stockings lost its popularity. Many farmers were going bankrupt because they could not compete with the prices of nylon. The manufacturing process was much more difficult, and women simply were not interested. But then came something that changed the scenario.

The Internet is basically good for electronic commerce. It offers the market, although they may be polar opposites to each other geographically. Storage manufacturers  of vintage stores now open and create new classics again.

Lingerie shops have to compete with producers of nylon because there are enough consumers of silk stockings that are at your fingertips. Customers can order their stockings online and have them delivered to their door. There are now many companies that make traditional leg wear, and a number of other clothes like bras and panties.

The bottom line is that today consumers can find any kind of hosiery they really want on the Internet.

When my sister and I were growing up in the 1960's we were tall, skinny, wirey tomboys. For some reason my mother associated garter belts with thoughts of sex and loose women and provided us with GIRDLES with clips attached for stockings. Well years later we still enjoy wearing them .

I wear nylon stockings on a regular basis but I must admit there is nothing like the feeling and allure of silk stockings.
